EXPLORE THE SOMATIC ARTIST
Welcome to The Somatic Artist! A space devoted to meaningful, emotionally resonant paintings and fine art prints.
My work is deeply shaped by both my personal healing journey and my professional path as a psychotherapist in the eating disorder field. I am a self-taught artist whose practice emerged unexpectedly during my PhD research, where I used arts-based methods with youth experiencing homelessness and eating disorders. In my dissertation, participants created body maps to express the embodied and somatic trauma/pain of living with an eating disorder while enduring homelessness (among other intersections) stories held not only in words, but voiced through the body itself.
During one session, a youth participant invited me to paint alongside them for reasons of comfort. That simple act of shared creation became a turning point. What began as connection and meaning-making quietly awakened my own relationship with painting.
Since then, painting has become my somatic language. It has become a way of processing emotion, releasing what words cannot hold, and honoring both suffering and healing. Each piece carries layers of experience: some rooted in activism, such as my advocacy for nature, endangered whale species, eating and body image struggles and LGBTQIA++ rights; others explore the tender, complex emotional landscapes that emerge in grief, recovery, resilience, and becoming.
At its core, my work is an invitation: to feel, to witness, and to remember that the body and wildlife surrounding us, hold wisdom, even in its pain.
